How the People Use Internet and Social Media in Netherlands
Active use of Facebook is declining, Dutch people watch YouTube for an average of 40 minutes a day and baby boomers are driving growth.
This is apparent from the ‘What’s Happening Online’ survey that has been conducted by Ruigrok NetPanel for 10 years. This results in a cross-section of internet and social media use in Dutch society. I put the most striking things when it comes to social media, online video and e-commerce in a row in 9 graphs and a lot of statistics. First of all this: the research distinguishes four user groups, namely digitizes, millennial’s, generation X and baby boomers. Digitizes are 14 to 20 years old, millennial’s are 21 to 35 years old, generation X is 36 to 55 years old and baby boomers are 56 years old or older.
Devices
The use of mobile devices and mobile services continues to rise in 2017, as does the use of online music and online TV. Smart TVs have again experienced strong growth this year. The generation differences in the use of devices are becoming smaller. In 2017, a large majority of baby boomers have also adopted the smartphone. Generation X uses the tablet the most of all generations. In addition, it is striking that among this generation and among baby boomers, the use of the tablet comes fairly close to that of the smartphone. In the younger generations, the opposite is true.
Social media
The use of Facebook is declining for the first time. Despite the decline in use, many Dutch people still have an account with Facebook. Millennial’s and generation X are mainly responsible for that decline: the active use of Facebook has dropped from 85 percent to 77 percent for millennial’s. Unlike Facebook, the use of Instagram (also owned by Facebook) is on the rise. In addition streamerplus can help you gain followers in Facebook and Instagram. One in four Dutch people now calls themselves an active user of this network. It is striking that the increase in the use of Instagram is only visible in the older generations, especially in generation X the use has increased considerably.Online Video Popular
A large majority of Dutch people now watch TV, videos or films via the internet. Almost all digitieners and millennials watch online video and the older generations are increasingly finding the online channel for TV. In 2017, Dutch people watch TV more often online via laptop or desktop, via television and via smartphone than in 2016.Personal Data on the Internet
Despite the hacks, ransomware and data leaks flying around you, little has changed in the Dutch people’s perception in terms of concern over the past 10 years. About half are still concerned about the security of their personal data on the internet. Of all generations, digitians are the least worried. The group of digitizes who are worried has grown. This growth can also be seen among millennial’s. Baby boomers are the most concerned.54 percent are concerned about the ‘traces’ they leave on the internet. Then we are talking about address data and banking, passwords and online behavior such as search history and visited websites. In addition, Dutch people are concerned about the visibility of photos, likes and comments on social media and (shared) locations.
